Have you ever wondered where your thoughts come from? Are you hard on yourself when you make a mistake and get caught up in negative self-talk? Have you ever noticed a thought that sounded a lot more like your Mom's voice than yours?
Maybe you've felt at times like your thoughts or emotions are running you and that you have no control, but I'm here to tell you that you have ALL the power to change, and it starts with that big, juicy, beautiful brain of yours and neuroplasticity.
'Neuro WHAT?' you may ask, let me explain...
Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change and reorganize itself in response to new experiences, learning, and even injury. It is the fundamental process that underlies our ability to create new neural pathways and connections, and ultimately change our thoughts and beliefs (the filter through which we experience life).
Creating new neural pathways can sometimes be challenging, as our brains like to stick to familiar patterns and ways of thinking (imagine a negative thought or belief deepening its 'groove' in the brain every time we return to it). The good news is that we have the power to change our neuroplasticity and make it easier for our brains to create new connections, which also makes the new thought or belief easier to return to and, therefore, offers an opportunity to let go of old negative thought patterns.
By practicing a new skill or engaging in a novel experience, we can strengthen the neural connections associated with that activity and create lasting change in our brains. We can also utilize positive phrases or affirmations, to tell the brain a new story. The more consistently it hears this new message the better, and if the new message can be said in the present tense, all the better, such as saying something like 'I am confident in my ability to learn from mistakes and solve problems with ease' rather than 'I'm so stupid, I'll never get this!'. Which of those statements offers some kindness and support? And which of those statements would lock you into a negative spiral of defeat?
It's also important to note that our mindset and beliefs are crucial in promoting neuroplasticity. If we believe that we can grow and change, we are more likely to engage in activities that promote neuroplasticity and create new neural pathways. On the other hand, if we feel stuck or believe that our abilities are fixed, it can be challenging to break out of old patterns of thinking, but NOT impossible.
So, be gentle with yourself and trust in your ability and your own power, to change anything you want, in your life. Whether it's through deliberate, repetitive positive phrasing practice, exposure to new experiences, or simply starting with a growth mindset, you CAN shape your brain and, ultimately, how you experience life.
Neuroplasticity reminds us that our brains are not fixed, but always evolving. With the right mindset and effort, you have the power to change, grow, and thrive beyond your wildest dreams.
Let's say it together, my friends: 'I am an amazing creator of change in my life; anything I put my attention and energy to becomes my reality'. xo
